Andy Warhol

“Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art”

Warhol, stage name of Andrew Warhola, was born in Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) on 6 August 1928. His parents had both emigrated to the United States from a small town in Slovakia. In 1945 he enrolled at the Carnegie Institute of Technology graduating in pictorial drawing. In 1949 the artist concluded his academic career in Fine Arts. In the same year he moved to New York working as an advertising graphic designer for some magazines: "Vogue", "Harper's Bazar" and "Glamour". In June 1952 the Hugo Gallery on 55th Street chose him for a solo exhibition. It is the cornerstone of an exciting exhibition career. Around 1960 Warhol began executing his first paintings based on advertising images, while in 1962 he developed the silk-screen printing technique. Later he founded the Factory and in 1964 he exhibited at the Sonnabend Gallery in Paris and at Leo Castelli Gallery in New York. In 1980 he became producer of Andy Warhol's TV. In the last years of life also dealt with the revisiting of works by the great masters of the Renaissance such as Leonardo da Vinci. Andy Warhol died in New York on 22 February 1987 from complications following a surgical operation.
